Bamboo Products

Bamboo is an amazing natural raw material that can be used to produce hundreds of products. People in Asia have been using bamboo for hundreds of years (as scaffolding, rafts etc). Today bamboo can be used to make chopping bards, surf boards, flooring, furniture, plates and many other products.

There are plenty of incentives for using a product that is made from bamboo. Besides being great for the environment, they are incredibly durable and relatively cheap. I have a bamboo shelf in my home that was passed down from my grandmother. It is about 60 years old but still feels really sturdy like it was made yesterday.

The Imperfect Bamboo

Although bamboo seems to be the perfect alternative to wood, it is an imperfect solution. Recent research has shown that the production of bamboo fabric involves some chemical processes that are not very good for the environment. Some also quote that many farmers in Asia are beginning to clear large patches of forests for bamboo cultivation.

Although these issues do hold some truth, I see the use of bamboo products as the lesser of two evils. The use of conventional wood (from the forest) causes the loss of natural habitat. Many of the processes involved in the production of wood based products are also hazardous. Among both of these materials, I would say that the use of bamboo causes less environmental destruction compared to wood. The manufacturing process of bamboo is getting better (and more environmentally friendly) by the day and it is only a matter of time before it becomes more sustainable.

Bamboo For the Future

Bamboo is one of the most amazing plants in nature. Besides being a vital food source for the cuddly pandas, Bamboo is now beginning to play a vital role in the evolution of the human race. Unlike many other plans, the bamboo is a very versatile material that can be used to produce a variety of products. It can be use to make paper, fabric, furniture and also serve well as construction materials.

In our world today, most of our furniture, paper and a variety of other wood based products come from forests. The rate of deforestation today is at its peak. Here is where bamboo comes into the picture. It is actually a type of grass and has one of the highest growth rates among plants. They are also very durable where rafts that were made from bamboo is known to last for generations.

If we begin to use more and more bamboo products in our daily lives (instead of wood) we stand a better chance in creating a more positive outlook for the environment. Thanks to their fast growth rates, less land will be needed for their commercial cultivation. Bamboo Farms will also help neutralize the emission of green house gasses.
